About the Author
Bruce W. Melville took an academic position at The University of Auckland, New Zealand, in 1980, following five years hydraulic design work in the United Kingdom, the Middle East, SE Asia, and New Zealand. He has been associated with bridge scour research and design in New Zealand since 1972, having published over 40 conference and journal papers related to bridge scour. He was recently part of a team that prepared a strategic plan for future bridge scour research in the U.S.A, sponsored by the U.S. Transportation Research Board, and is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, ASCE. His research interests are focused on various aspects of fluvial sediment transport including bridge scour.

Stephen E. Coleman received his Ph.D. degree from The University of Auckland, New Zealand, in 1992, winning the Lorenz G. Straub Award from The University of Minnesota, U.S.A., for his Ph.D. research on river mechanics. He then worked as a consulting engineer before returning to an academic position at The University of Auckland. His field of expertise is in research and design relating to various aspects of river mechanics, including bridge scour, having published numerous conference and journal papers related to scour.
